It was David A J Berner mentioning 12 Monkeys that made me think of it so I did a re-watch to make sure I hadn't recommended a turkey. It left me feeling a bit more like Donnie Darko than 12 Monkeys, I didn't enjoy it quite as much as Donnie Darko so let's call it Donnie Lighto!

Donnie Lighto has got 3 acts and the first half is really all set up before diving into the premise (which makes it feel a bit like 2 acts instead) but if you're patient I don't think you'll be disappointed. The editor obviously figured it felt a bit slow too as it does one of those "chuck you in at the deep end" scenes at the beginning presumably to add a bit of intrigue and pep to the first half.

Ashton Kutcher isn't playing his usual type cast romantic lead for a change and that's quite refreshing.

There's a Super 8 ex machina ending which feels a bit incongruous but I forgave that pretty quickly for what is quite a thought provoking conclusion, had me mulling it over for a couple of hours.

Overall, a nice little flick with a surprising narrative slope which I think you'll quite enjoy if you like a bit of philosophy served up with your sci-fi...
