If you're a fan of english actors, then this film has absolutely tons of recognisable legends (some of which even go uncredited so keep your eyes peeled).
Nick (Pegg) is a by-the-numbers city cop who is so professional and efficient that he's embarrassing the other officers he works with, so they reassign him to a countryside post where he's partnered up with Danny Butterman (Frost).
Danny is the polar opposite of Nick and the story essentially discusses how by mixing those traits, they make a superb team and grow as people. Nick learns to relax a bit and Danny learns to become a bit more disciplined.
Nick takes himself very seriously and it's quite satisfying watching the locals mock him in a very typical British way. You need a good sense of humour if you live in this country because banter is part of the culture! Expect to be ridiculed and know it's good natured, so lighten up - it's captured here quite well on screen.
There is of course some skulduggery going on in the village which our budding hero's investigate. A murderer is on the loose. Nick speculates it's a conspiracy but no-one believes him and the aforementioned ribbing ensues.
It gets a bit twisty (and silly) before the end. I won't spoil it for those who've never seen it. It's funnier if you're familiar with the Point Break (1991) and Bad Boys 2 (2003) movies.
The team of Simon Pegg and Nick Frost being directed by Edgar Wright is well known for creating some real comedy gold. If you liked Shaun Of The Dead (2004) or have ever seen the comedy series Spaced (1999) then you'll know what I'm talking about (if you haven't and you like a bit of chuckling then add them to your list). You can tell they're good mates in real life and it's reflected in their obvious chemistry.
It's a very well written script. The benchmark for good writing is that there's no fat, in other words every scene advances the plot in some way and there's no unnecessary dialogue. It's very slick, sometimes even when a joke doesn't land you later realise that it was just satire on what happens when a joke doesn't land - a bit like how the humorous thing about a Dad joke can be laughing at how it's an obvious groaner!
You will probably relate better to this film if you are familiar with England and its sometimes quaint foibles because there is a lot of play on these tropes.
Although satirical, there is a certain degree of truth in the observation that rural police forces are certainly less strict than urban ones, probably because of the type and levels of crime they have to deal with.
As you know, comedy is very subjective and many factors play into your personal enjoyment of it so I can't guarantee you'll have fun with this film. I can only say that it makes me laugh, it's paced well (gives you time to get the joke before it moves on, rather than bombarding you with humour to the point of exhaustion) and it's structurally sound as a movie, which is a bit clinical but I don't want to mislead you.
If you've enjoyed any of the stuff Simon Pegg and crew have created over the years then I reckon you'll have a blast!
"By the power of Grayskull!"
